Tvary nového kompaktního Peugeotu bývají dávány do souvislostí s osvědčeným zevnějškem Volkswagenu Golf.

PEUGOET 308 SW Avant garde cabin design Generous boot space Punchy powertrain VOLKSWAGEN GOLF VARIANT Technologically advanced cabin Pliant and comfortable ride Smooth powertrain The Peugeot 308 SW is more affordable and a little more spacious but the Volkswagen Golf Variant's technologically-advanced cabin and better ride is hard to ignore. Stationwagons, or estates, whichever you prefer terming them, haven't had much success on our shores. Despite being the go-to family vehicle for Europeans for decades, us Asians have always had an aversion to them, due to their resemblance to should we really let our outdated superstitions get in the way of practicality? We think not, especially when the latest crop of wagons available are more stylish than their hatchback siblings. The updated Golf Variant returns to find itself amongst strong competition in the form of the Peugeot 308 SW Two of our favourites so far remain the Volkswagen Golf Variant, which has recently been refreshed, and its stylish French rival, the Peugeot 308 SW. So if you're a forward-thinker who's looking for a good-looking European people carrier, the question, then, is - which of these two should you get? First impressionsIf you're someone who likes going against the norm (you must be, since you're considering a wagon) and standing out from the crowd, you might prefer the 308 SW for several of which is the way its cabin has been styled, which is entirely unconventional compared to the Golf Variant's teutonic approach. In the 308, the instrument cluster sits atop the dash, instead of in it, which is cool even if it does take some getting used to. The Golf Variant offers a more technologically advanced and user-friendly experience There's also a much cleaner design inside the 308 SW, which does away with most of the conventional buttons on the centre console. That form, however, has a slight functional disadvantage as conducting simple actions like adjusting the air-conditioning the other hand, the Golf Variant's sharper, albeilt smaller-sized Discover Pro infotainment has a more intuitive interface. Coupled with its high-resolution, digital Active Info Display cluster, it offers a more technologically advanced experience, even if its overall cabin design isn't as avant garde. The 308 SW's 660-litre boot offers 55 litres of cargo space more than the Golf Variant's At $129,900 (as of 15 November 2018), the extra $20,901 for the Golf Variant also gets you more cubbyholes, an electrically adjusted driver's seat, paddle shifters and rear air-conditioning. Both cars are equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto while both cars do offer enough space for a family of five, the 308's larger size and longer wheelbase do mean there is a tad more rom for those riding at the back. It also has a larger 660-litre boot with the rear seats up, outsizing the Golf's 605 litres. Still, unless you're a fairly large person, which most of us Asians aren't, there is enough room in the Golf to feel comfortable on long drives. Speaking of drives…It comes as quite a surprise that the Golf Variant, as the car with one more cylinder and a larger engine, has a lower power output. Its turbocharged four-banger churns 123bhp and 200Nm of torque while the 308 SW's boost three-cylinder makes 129bhp and 230Nm of torque. The 308 SW may have a smaller capacity engine and one less cylinder but it has a higher output of 129bhp and 230Nm of torque Thankfully, with an extra gear and closer gear ratios to help with acceleration and top speed, the Golf Variant is quicker in a straight line to 100km/h, taking seconds. The 308 SW trails behind slightly, with a century sprint timing of terms of ride quality, the Golf Variant is slightly plusher and more settled over bumps and ruts. But if you prefer a car that offers quicker direction changes and a meatier steering, the 308 SW feels like the sportier one to have. The Golf Variant's extra seventh gear helps with straight-line performance, resulting in a century sprint that's faster than the more powerful Peugeot Sounds like a tie, then? The 308 SW is the more emotional purchase, with its design and the way it drives. Yet, it also offers a little more room all around with a lower $108,999 (as of 15 November 2018) price tag and a cheaper annual road tax of $508 versus the Golf Variant's $ always, the Golf Variant has a lot to lose going up against a competitor as strong as this Peugeot. And this time, the 308 SW is seemingly the one that offers more bang for buck. Whether its the more avant garde 308 or the more tech-savvy Golf Variant you prefer, they prove wagons deserve more attention But if you are a sucker for digitally-advanced cabins, better ride quality, lighter-footed performance and that aggressive R-Line kit, you'll have to be prepared to pay the premium for the Golf way, these two prove that before you jump on a deal for a sport utility vehicle, you should first give wagons a second look.
Peugeot 308 has 3 litres more trunk space than the Volkswagen Golf. The maximum boot capacity (with all rear seats folded down) is larger in Peugeot 308 (by 654 litres). Skip to ContentSkip to FooterWith plenty of tech and performance, there’s a lot to love about the VW Golf GTI and Peugeot 308 GTi - but which is better?17 Jun 2017The performance hatch sector has evolved to the point where family cars are now putting nearly 400bhp to the road through clever and complex four-wheel-drive systems. However, this continuous progress means cars such as the new Volkswagen Golf GTI are more relevant than ever. This GTI still offers plenty of performance, but in a usable and more affordable package compared with fire-breathing models such as the Mercedes-AMG A 45.• Best hot hatches on saleThe latest incarnation is a mild facelift rather than a radical rethink of the recipe, but it faces a serious challenge from the Peugeot 308 GTi. In such a tight and competitive sector, this will be a tough test for the Golf GTI 5dr DSGPeugeot 308 GTi 270 by Peugeot SportPrice: £29,990£29,405Engine: 4cyl turbo 4cyl turbo petrolPower/torque: 227bhp/350Nm268bhp/330NmTransmission:Six-speed dual-clutch automatic, front-wheel drive Six-speed manual, front-wheel drive 0-60mph: secondsTop speed:154mph155mphTest economy: 148g/km/£140139g/km/£140Options: Discover Navigation Pro (£1,325), lane assist plus (£1,225), rear-view camera (£265), 19-inch ‘Santiago’ alloy wheels (£990)Pearlescent paint (£675), panoramic roof (£500), Peugeot Connect SOS and Assistance (£240)Volkswagen Golf GTI• For: Discreet body styling, usability, performance, typical VW quality.• Against: Not as powerful as rivals, gimmicky optional infotainment set-up, DSG box pricier and not as involving as history of high-performance family cars stretches back decades, and the revised GTI is the brand’s most accomplished model so far to bear the iconic boot badge. It sits above the standard TSI and TDI hatches, and beneath the range-topping Golf R. That car is four-wheel drive only, so the front-wheel-drive GTI represents an appealing middle ground for those looking for affordable pace and reviews Based on the Golf hatch, the GTI is available with three or five doors, but no estate is offered. Following a mid-life facelift earlier this year, the familiar petrol turbo now comes with 227bhp as standard. A GTI Performance model is also available, pushing power to test car was fitted with VW’s DSG dual-clutch automatic gearbox – a six-speed unit here, but a seven-speeder on the GTI Performance. While the Peugeot is manual only, offering a good level of engagement, the Golf’s twin-clutch box features launch control for lightning-fast starts and crisp shifts. A sweet six-speed manual is also available, saving £1,415 and matching the involvement offered by the Golf’s throttle response is excellent, with little turbo lag and plenty of torque in the mid-range. In fact, 350Nm is available from as low as 1,500rpm, so the VW was strong in our in-gear the Peugeot’s superior power meant it was quicker both off the line and through the gears. The Golf sprinted from 0-60mph in seconds, and completed its fourth-gear 30-50mph dash in seconds, compared with and seconds respectively for the 308 GTi. The VW covered the 30-50mph sprint in third in seconds, which was identical to the figure we recorded in the Golf’s optional 19-inch alloys kick up quite a bit of tyre roar, and previous experience on the standard 18-inch wheels suggest they’d be much quieter over broken British roads. They offer a more comfortable ride as well, and while the VW is still more composed than the Peugeot, we’d opt for the smaller rims to get the more composed smaller wheels require little sacrifice when it comes to handling, too. The Golf’s precise steering is nicely geared and weighted, while the MQB platform helps here, serving up plenty of grip in corners while offering great even more versatility? The £830 adaptive dampers sharpen up the chassis in Sport, cutting roll and improving response on turn-in. Meanwhile, in Comfort the GTI offers a relatively relaxing ride given its ability on a twisting back notes:• Infotainment: Hi-tech digital display complements cabin’s good build quality and soft-touch materials.• Wheel: GTI’s smart flat-bottomed steering wheel boasts leather trim with sporty red stitching.• Transmission: Our test car had six-speed DSG dual-clutch auto; this features seven speeds on the GTI Performance. A sweet six-speed manual is available for less money. Peugeot 308 GTi• For: Strong engine, impressive traction, agility to match that of the Golf GTI.• Against: Frustratingly slow infotainment system, compromised driving position, pronounced road noise. The 308 is based on Peugeot’s EMP2 scalable platform. This is the answer to Volkswagen’s MQB architecture that underpins the Golf GTI, and it’s a decent base from which to develop a hot hatch. MacPherson struts at the front match the Golf’s, but the torsion beam rear axle isn’t as sophisticated as the VW’s multi-link set-up. However, additional tweaks from Peugeot Sport help ensure this GTi 270 is a proper rival to the fact, it offers more power than even the GTI Performance, with Peugeot Sport’s engineers extracting 268bhp from the 308 GTi’s smaller four-cylinder turbo. The unit is slightly down on torque, though, with only 330Nm to play with, delivered higher up, at 1,900rpm. This reflects the engine’s peakier character. The smaller capacity means the motor has to be revved harder to extract the performance, but it’s an eager engine that hurls the Peugeot along when the turbo is spinning. This was reflected in the 308 GTi’s quicker 0-60mph time of seconds, even though it uses a six-speed manual rather than the faster DSG in the in the Golf there’s no dual-clutch auto option, so you’ll have to make do with the manual. Despite a slightly long throw, the gearbox offers more engagement than the VW’s admittedly quick DSG. However, it’s not quite as effective in raw performance terms, and neither is it as sweet as the Golf’s standard-fit six-speed 308’s slightly lower torque output doesn’t seem to have a detrimental effect on in-gear performance; the 159kg lighter kerbweight gives the car an advantage. For us, it pulled strongly even in fifth gear, completing the 50-70mph dash in seconds. The Golf took more than a second longer, completing the same test in part of the Peugeot Sport tweaks, the 308 GTi also gets big Alcon brakes. These offer good feel, even if they give no more stopping power than the VW’s set-up. Where the 308 loses out to the Golf is in ride and handling. The Peugeot’s dampers are fairly firm, so body control is good in quick corners, but the car doesn’t have the same split-personality feel as the Golf, and it’s not as compliant during normal driving or on long journeys. It’s not uncomfortable, but doesn’t offer the finesse of the VW’s damping driving position isn’t as natural, either. Peugeot’s i-Cockpit layout features a narrow-diameter steering wheel, which means the 308 turns in quickly. There’s plenty of grip on offer to match the speed of the steering, but this gives a more frenetic feel more of the notes:• Infotainment: 308’s touchscreen is less intuitive and functional than Golf’s, and there’s no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.• Transmission: Manual is only option, unlike with Golf’s dual-clutch auto. It offers more engagement.• Wheel: i-Cockpit’s narrow-diameter steering wheel results in a quick turn-in for the GTiVerdictFirst place: Volkswagen Golf GTIThe Golf GTI is a brilliant hot hatch. Rivals might offer more power, but the VW is still fast enough and simply brilliant to drive. Its combination of quality, usability, practicality and economy makes it one of the finest all-rounders on sale today. We’d spend the extra for the GTI Performance, too. Second place: Peugeot 308 GTiThe 308 GTi puts up a good fight thanks to its impressive performance, yet the VW’s superior handling, better tech and top-notch build quality give it the edge here. The Peugeot might be faster, but it isn’t as fun or as sharp to drive.
